matriculation
ABAKALIKI, NIGERIA — March 14, 2026
Governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has approved full scholarship awards for 187 pioneer students of the Ebonyi State University of ICT Oferekpe.
The governor made the announcement on Saturday during the maiden matriculation ceremony of the institution held at the university’s Convocation Arena in Oferekpe Agbaja.
According to the governor, the scholarships will cover the students for five years, even if they are unable to access funding from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund.
Government Emphasizes Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Governor Nwifuru explained that the university was established to produce graduates who will become job creators through innovation and technology, rather than relying solely on the limited white-collar job market.
He stressed that the state government’s education policy prioritizes entrepreneurship, skill acquisition, and economic self-reliance.
“The rate of unemployment is troubling and only entrepreneurship education can empower our young people to become self-employed and create job opportunities,” the governor said.
He added that the institution is designed to produce graduates who can think creatively and provide innovative solutions to societal challenges.
Warning Against Cultism and Examination Malpractice
The governor also issued a stern warning to the newly admitted students, stating that the administration maintains zero tolerance for examination malpractice, cultism, and other anti-social activities.
He urged the freshmen to be good ambassadors of the university, the Oferekpe Agbaja community, their families, and Ebonyi State.
Infrastructure Development Underway
As part of efforts to create a conducive academic environment, the governor revealed that the state government has begun constructing key infrastructure within the university, including:
- Modern lecture theatres
- Senate and administrative buildings
- Staff quarters
- Student hostels
These facilities are expected to strengthen the university’s capacity to deliver high-quality technological education.
Vice Chancellor Highlights Early Research Achievements
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Engr. Prof. Ernest Egba, noted that despite beginning academic activities in mid-2025, the university has already recorded notable research progress.
According to him, some early research efforts include creative sketching innovations, production of medical consumables, and products supporting female hygiene.
He emphasized that the university’s creation was deliberate and strategic.
“The investment in the university is an investment in the technological sovereignty of our dear state and Nigeria,” he said.
Academic Structure
The university currently operates through five faculties hosting 20 academic programmes, including:
- Faculty of Engineering and Technology
- Faculty of Computing
- Faculty of Communication, Management and Social Sciences
- Faculty of Allied Health Sciences
- Faculty of Architecture and Environmental Sciences
The maiden matriculation ceremony officially marks the beginning of a new era of ICT-driven education and innovation in Ebonyi State.
