The Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI) has officially informed members of its academic community about a nationwide essay competition aimed at fostering critical thinking and innovation among tertiary institution students across Nigeria.
In an internal memo issued by the Office of the Registrar and dated April 1, 2026, the university disclosed that the initiative is being organized by the Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative (BBYDI), a non-profit organization committed to youth empowerment and intellectual development.
According to the memo, the competition seeks to engage students in thoughtful discourse around emerging technologies, with a particular focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI). Participants are expected to critically analyze how AI can be applied responsibly to drive innovation, enhance public welfare, and promote inclusive national development.
The theme of the competition has been announced as: “Artificial Intelligence for the Public Good: Balancing Innovation, Human Welfare and Responsible Governance.” This theme reflects the growing global conversation around ethical AI usage and its implications for society, governance, and economic growth.
To encourage participation and reward excellence, the organizers have outlined attractive cash prizes for outstanding entries. The first-place winner will receive ₦400,000, while the second and third-place winners will be awarded ₦300,000 and ₦200,000 respectively. In addition, the top ten finalists will be sponsored to attend the National Grand Finale scheduled for May 13, 2026, offering them further exposure and networking opportunities.
The deadline for submission of essays has been fixed for April 15, 2026, giving interested students a limited window to prepare and submit their entries. The university urged students to take advantage of this opportunity, emphasizing the importance of intellectual engagement beyond the classroom.
For further inquiries, the memo provided contact details of BBYDI representatives, ensuring that interested participants can easily access guidance and support throughout the application process.
The university management concluded by encouraging all eligible students to actively participate in the competition, describing it as a valuable platform for showcasing creativity, research ability, and forward-thinking ideas in one of the most transformative fields of the modern era.
