The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University has recorded major improvements in its digital library facilities, significantly enhancing the experience of students participating in computer-based examinations.
Speaking during an interview with the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), the Director of the Management Information and Communication Technology Unit (MICTU), Ike Onyenwe, attributed the development to the support of the Vice-Chancellor, Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie.
From Overcrowding to Efficiency
Professor Onyenwe revealed that the digital library previously struggled with overcrowding and limited functional systems, making examinations stressful for both students and staff.
According to him, only about 380 computers were operational before the recent intervention—far below the capacity required for the university’s growing population.
“The environment was not conducive for computer-based examinations such as GS and CSC courses,” he noted.
Improved Capacity and Stability
Following the upgrades, the facility now boasts over 500 functional computers and can accommodate more than 500 students simultaneously, with improved system stability and minimal technical disruptions.
The improvements have transformed the examination environment into a more efficient, reliable, and student-friendly system.
Also speaking, the Deputy Director of General Studies, Ebele Ojukwu, confirmed that previous issues such as system glitches and interruptions during exams have been effectively resolved.
“These challenges are now a thing of the past,” she stated, commending the university management for its proactive intervention.
An invigilator, Lizzy Anierobi, also noted that the improved system has made exam supervision more seamless and efficient.
Student Experience and Welfare
Students have equally expressed satisfaction with the upgraded system. One student, Ogbalimgba Chisom Lilian, described the CBT process as smooth, organized, and stress-free, particularly highlighting the ease of verification and check-in.
However, she appealed to the university management to extend similar digital upgrades to the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences campus in Agulu, to reduce the need for students to travel to Awka for examinations.
Medical Support Now Integrated
In a notable development, medical support has been incorporated into the examination process. A healthcare officer, Ebuka Emmanuel, disclosed that medical personnel are now stationed at the CBT centre to handle emergencies during examinations.
The upgrade marks a significant milestone in UNIZIK’s efforts to modernize academic infrastructure, improve service delivery, and enhance student experience through technology-driven solutions.
