The Students’ Union Government (SUG) Senate of Ebonyi State University has announced the commencement of a comprehensive constitutional reform process aimed at strengthening institutional structures within the Union.
In an official memorandum dated March 2, 2026, the Office of the Senate President acknowledged growing conversations surrounding the judicial framework and constitutional provisions of the SUG, particularly in light of recent internal legal proceedings.
The memorandum stated that the Senate, under its current leadership, is committed to structural reform, legislative clarity, and long-term institutional development.
According to the statement, a Constitution Review and Amendment Committee has been duly constituted to conduct a critical review of the existing SUG Constitution. The committee is mandated to examine all constitutional provisions, including the Union’s judicial framework, and propose amendments aligned with democratic best practices and operational efficiency.
The Senate further disclosed that drafting has commenced on Senate Standing Orders, supplementary legislative codes, and policy frameworks intended to eliminate ambiguities and enhance governance processes within the Union.
The reform initiatives, the memorandum noted, are part of a broader institutional strengthening agenda rather than a reaction to recent developments. It added that consultative meetings, policy engagements, and committee sessions have been ongoing since the inception of the current administration.
The Senate emphasized that its objective is to ensure the Students’ Union Government operates strictly within constitutional boundaries, supported by clearly defined legislative and judicial structures capable of sustaining continuity beyond individual administrations.
The Office also urged students to remain confident in the legislative arm of the Union while encouraging constructive engagement in shaping the future of student governance at the university.
The memorandum concluded with a commitment to building enduring institutional frameworks designed to promote transparency, accountability, and effective representation within the SUG.
